自创世纪起，人类被逐出伊甸园，男人承受劳碌之苦，而女人承受生育之苦——60年代避孕药的发明，终于令性成为了纯粹的娱乐，但是，女性常用的避孕方法就是口服避孕药，因为口服避孕药的效率高，并且它使用起来也方便。

目前口服避孕药主要为复合性激素类药物，内含合成雌二醇estradiol和孕酮类似物progestin。这两种外源性激素，通过作用于大脑下丘脑-垂体-卵巢轴，协同加强抑制女性正常的排卵功能，阻碍子宫内膜正常生长，改变子宫颈黏液性质及改变输卵管正常蠕动等作用，从而达到避孕效果。然而，口服避孕药不但损耗体内营养物质，如维生素C， 叶酸，维生素B2， B6，B12，镁，硒，酪氨酸。而且，它还会影响人体正常的雄性和雌性激素的自然分泌，尤其是内源性孕激素和睾酮的水平，影响了体内各自然性激素的系统平衡，可出现乳房肿胀、头痛晕、呕吐、情绪不稳等，还会降低女性性欲，减少女性阴道润滑液分泌，使性交时由于干燥而产生不适或疼痛感。1995年Graham领导的双盲随机实验结果中发现，复合口服避孕药(estrogen-progestin)，与女性性欲下降有关联。
