指甲长了，容易藏污纳垢、滋生细菌。很多人习惯把指甲剪得很短，殊不知，这样不但不能保护手指，还会帮倒忙。剪指甲的合适长度是：指甲顶端与指顶齐平或稍长一些，留出一小条白边即可。

指甲剪得太短，在拿东西、工作、做家务过程中，很容易与甲床脱离，指头前段的软组织没有指甲覆盖，指甲的尖端就会向里生长，严重时会诱发甲沟炎，还易受到真菌的侵害。

剪指甲应先剪中间再修两头，这样易于掌控修剪的长度，避免把边角剪得过深。否则，新长出来的指甲很容易嵌入软组织内，成为“嵌甲”，损伤指甲周围的皮肤，造成皮下组织化脓性感染。剪指甲时平着剪，不要将指甲刀硬塞进指甲缝里掏着剪;如果指甲有尖角，务必把这些尖角修圆。
